The Cardiac Surgery Resident Education Program is uniquely located within three interconnected medical centers on the Vanderbilt University campus. Residents perform clinical rotations within each of these hospitals: the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and the Nashville Veterans Administrative Medical Center (VAMC). Inpatient and outpatient services are also located within each hospital.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is the largest comprehensive research, teaching and patient care health system in the Mid-South region. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, VUMC sees over 3.2 million patient visits per year in over 180 ambulatory locations, performs 79,000 surgical operations and discharges 78,000 inpatients from its main-campus adult, children’s, psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals and three regional community hospitals. The Medical Center is the largest non-governmental employer of Middle Tennesseans, with more than 40,000 staff, including more than 3,000 physicians, advanced practice nurses and scientists appointed to the Vanderbilt University faculty.
Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt
The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt provides the highest level of cardiac care for children and young adults throughout the United States. With more than 500 physicians trained in 30 pediatric and surgical specialties, the hospital offers comprehensive services for everything from cancer, transplant, trauma, and sickle cell disease, to developmental disorders, ENT, general surgery and others. Featuring Centers of Excellence for the treatment of diabetes and congenital heart disorders, Children’s Hospital is also home to the highest level NICU in the state and serves as Nashville's Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Nashville is part of an integrated health care system that provides a continuum of outpatient and inpatient care to our nation's Veterans. Located adjacent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, the Nashville VAMC functions as a primary care and referral center for eligible veterans in middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky and northern Alabama.
