Matthew D. Bacchetta, MD, MBA, FACS
Dr. Bacchetta is a member of our surgical faculty in the Vanderbilt Department of Cardiac Surgery. He previously held the position of Associate Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY. He served in numerous positions at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY, including: Assistant Professor of Surgery; Co-Director, The Center for Acute Respiratory Failure; Director, Pulmonary Thromboendartectomy Program; Director of Adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Program and Surgical Director, The Pulmonary Hypertension Comprehensive Care Center.
Dr. Bacchetta’s clinical areas of interest include lung transplant, pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, surgery for lung and esophageal cancer and surgery for diseases of the lung, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and mechanical assist devices.
Dr. Bacchetta is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, STS Task Force for Military Affairs, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Bacchetta is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves and has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2017, Dr. Bacchetta won the Teaching Award in Surgery: For Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring from Columbia University Department of Surgery.

Research Information
Dr. Bacchetta’s primary research interests include bioengineering for organ recovery and regeneration; development of an artificial pulmonary assist device for chronic lung disease; ECMO for acute and chronic cardiopulmonary disease such ARDS and bridge to lung transplantation.
