(CHAMP) Study 

Did you  know that two - thirds of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients in America are women?

Tremendous strides have been made in Alzheimer's Disease research over the past several years, but we do not know why the risk for Alzheimer's Disease is higher for women.

We are hoping to study whether biological, brain, and memory changes that occur at menopause are connected to late life risk for Alzheimer's Disease.

Understanding the biological, cognitive, and lifestyle factors that may differ between women after menopause is critical for helping us understand the increased risk for AD in women as they age.

You maybe eligible to participate if you are:

  • A women between 50-70 years of age.

  • Postmenopausal 

  • Nonsmoker

  • Have not taken any type of hormone treatment in the past 12 months.

Why Should I Participate?

  • Women are at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). 

  • To help studying whether biological, brain, and memory changes that occur at menopause are connected to late life risk for AD.

What is Involved?

Interested women will undergo a telephone/video screening to determine eligibility. If you agree to participate in the study, you will have to complete an online questionnaires and a medical screening visit to see if you qualify for the study. 

The screening visit will take approximately 3 hours and will take place at either the Clinical Research Center or the Center for Cognitive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This visit will include a physical exam, an interview, and standard medical tests.
 
You will also have an electrocardiogram (ECG) performed that measures the functioning and rhythm of your heart.

After you have completed the screening process and have been determined to be eligible to continue, you will be scheduled to participate in four (4) study visits at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Those visits will include a Magnetic Resonance Imaging brain scan, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) brain scan and Lumbar Puncture.

Compensation

Participants will receive monetary compensation for time and efforts.

  • You will be contributing to our knowledge of how changes in the brain in women after menopause affect functioning and risk for Alzheimer's Disease in later life. 

  • 2-3 months for each participant.

  • We will notify you if there are any clinically important findings.

  • We are following all appropriate public health guidelines during the COVID19 Pandemic. We are going to be pre-screening people by phone. Once we have all your information, it will be provided to the study doctor to review.  We will then reach out to you via email or phone and discuss with you further screening activities including video conference and in person study visits.  For more information about our safety guidelines, please click here
