STROKE (CPG)

Stroke occurs in at least 2-3/100,000 children per year, an incidence comparable to pediatric brain tumor. Pediatric stroke may cause significant disability, and is also among the top-10 causes of death in children. Early recognition and treatment during the first hours and days after a stroke are important to minimize recurrence risk and optimize long-term functional outcome.

Rapid evaluation and neuroimaging are essential as a number of more common conditions such as migraine and seizure may mimic stroke in children. We developed a pediatric acute stroke protocol to assure that children with stroke-like symptoms are rapidly evaluated and treated. Our multidisciplinary Vanderbilt pediatric stroke and neurovascular team is able to provide comprehensive care.
