What is a Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection?

A catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) happens when germs enter the urinary tract of a patient with a urinary catheter and cause an infection.

What are we doing to prevent CAUTIs?

Our hospital uses prevention bundles that combine multiple evidence-based best practices to prevent catheter associated urinary tract infections.

How are we measuring?

We use a checklist known as a card-card to test or audit how well we perform to our prevention bundle standards.  Unit leaders, safety coaches and hospital executives use these cards to guide staff interviews, provide real time education and identify barriers to compliance.  

How can patients and families partner with us?

There is no such thing as "too safe" so please partner with us to provide the best and safest care possible

  • Ask questions about the urinary catheter
    • Is it still needed?
    • When can it come out?
  • Make sure the bag is replaced when full
  • Make sure the bag hangs below the patient so urine can't go back into the patient's body
