Residency Purpose Statement

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e.,BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

The purpose of the PGY2 Pharmacy Residency is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

 

Background

Vanderbilt University Hospital offers a combined PGY1 Pharmacy Practice / PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency. The program will offer comprehensive experience in a variety of pharmacy practice and health system pharmacy administration areas. The purpose of this program is to transition the new practitioner through a pharmacy practice PGY1 generalist program followed by a PGY2 specialized practice that meets the needs of the health system pharmacy practice resident in developing administrative practice skills.

 

Program Overview

Graduates will be equipped to assume leadership positions in various facets of health system pharmacy administrative and leadership practice, including gaining expertise in health system pharmacy operations and using business tools and knowledge to understand and plan for the continual transitions happening in today’s health care system. Other experiences in staff management, making complex financial and organizational decisions, and techniques for functioning in a fast paced environment will be provided. Graduates will gain experience in development of return on investment presentations for new programs, development of analytics capability, and possess the experience to lead practice change in the health system.

Masters Training

At Vanderbilt, we see value in masters-level training in business functions for HSPAL residents. The program will partner with Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management to support candidate training through the Master of Management in Healthcare (MMHC) program. This 13-month program will begin in the fall of the candidate's PGY1 residency year. Additional information about the program can be found here.

Rotations

All rotations are 1 month in duration. A single 1 month block will be designated as a transitional period dedicated to project time and meeting attendance, and another 1 month block will be designated for orientation during the PGY1 year. The resident schedule is flexible in order to allow the resident to meet his/her career goals and interests.

Longitudinal Experiences

The resident will complete a guided hospital practice experience on weekends and selected holidays during the PGY1 and PGY2 years. During the PGY2 year the resident will complete an administrative hospital practice experience while functioning as the lead pharmacist. Residents are expected to participate in development and delivery of staff and student education efforts, as well as conduct two longitudinal research projects suitable for presentation/publication.

Applicants with and without graduate training in management or health systems administration will be considered for this program. The RPD will work with the resident to determine options for completing academic graduate management training during the program if desired.

Application Requirements

Doctor of Pharmacy degree, licensure in Tennessee, CV,
letter of intent, 3 letters of recommendation, transcripts for pharmacy coursework, and GPA of 3.25 or greater.

The HSPAL program also requires the completion of a supplemental essay question.
In 250 words or less, please describe your most impactful leadership experience
and a lesson you learned from that experience.
