Culture Survey Resources

The VUMC Culture Survey is a bi-annual assessment of the organization’s workplace environment which aims to objectively evaluate our strengths and areas for improving how we work together to achieve excellence. This survey provides a platform for VUMC employees to anonymously communicate and share honest and insightful feedback that can foster positive institutional culture change.

The 2024 Culture Survey includes eight custom questions related to workplace harassment and discrimination. Responses to these questions will allow us to more effectively tailor policies, training, and programs to address the specific needs and concerns of our diverse employees, understand barriers to reporting, and to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will host in-person and virtual office hours for VUMC entity leaders to answer questions and provide guidance for communicating Culture Survey results specific to harassment and discrimination issues to local leaders and staff. 

Guidance for registering to attend office hours will be provided at a later date.

  • Development of the eight harassment and discrimination questions included in the 2024 Culture Survey were informed by results from the 2022 DEI Climate Survey. 

    The DEI Climate survey was conducted in September 2022 to obtain baseline data from the Vanderbilt Health workforce concerning their experience at the organization with bias, discrimination, racism, diversity, and inclusion. 

    Three main themes emerged from the survey results:

    1) Survey respondents were comfortable answering sensitive self-report demographic questions, the first time such questions were part of a VUMC survey.

    2) Marginalized groups, including minoritized racial and ethnic groups, and sexual and gender minorities, have a different experience at VUMC than majority groups.

    3) Microaggressions are occurring based on job roles in addition to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation.
