About the Program FAQs

  • Vanderbilt’s DMS Program provides excellence in healthcare, research and education. For more information about VUMC, please visit here. In our DMS Program, we provide one-on-one instruction with small class sizes. The training we provide occurs at diverse clinical sites, which helps students build lasting connections throughout the Vanderbilt network.

  • Within the curriculum, there are 2 professional courses that are delivered online. All other courses are residential and require attendance on campus.

  • Due to the intensive and progressive integration of didactic and clinical requirements of the DMS Program, part-time attendance is not an option.

  • Upon successful completion of the VUMC DMS Program, students receive a Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students are eligible to take the Abdomen and Obstetrics & Gynecology ARDMS certification exams once they meet requirements.

  • Classes begin only once a year in September.

  • No. All students complete rotations at designated clinical sites. The Program Director and Clinical Coordinator make rotation assignments.

  • Scan lab sessions occur at a time outside the busy clinical setting. These sessions allow students to make improvements and practice sonography skills with an instructor available for immediate feedback.

  • After passing the Sonographic Principles and Instrumentation Exam and completing the required courses, students will be eligible to take the RDMS Abdomen (AB) and RDMS Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) exams to earn credentials within the last 60 days of the DMS Program. Other credentials can be earned with the Clinical Verification (CV) form through the ARDMS. For more information on earning additional credentials, please visit here.

  • No, our program is a comprehensive abdominal-extended, OB/GYN ultrasound program. This allows students to gain knowledge of and clinical practice in sonography physics, anatomy, physiology, and pathology of abdomen, obstetrics, and gynecology.

  • Many DMS Program graduates have taken full-tome positions at VUMC. Students work with sonographers, build rapport with the staff, and help out as team members. We expect students to treat each day in clinical training as if it were a job interview.

  • Credits earned at VUMC may not transfer to other institutions. The determination of credit transfer is up to the receiving institution.

  • As an educational program in a medical center, most time is spent in the clinical setting where tours are not permissible.

  • Full review of the website information and all FAQs will typically provide necessary information. If, after reviewing the website, an applicant still has unanswered question(s), an email inquiry to the Program Director may be sent.
