Students may work while enrolled in the DMS Program but are advised to minimize the number of hours due to the intensive educational requirements. All students are required to remain current in assignments by maintaining a minimum average for satisfactory academic progress in order to progress through the curriculum.
-
A typical day varies depending on which rotation the student is in. Some days will be courses and a lab session, while others will be days in the clinic. Refer to the Program Timeline for the number of attendance hours in each rotation.
-
The curriculum will not exceed 40 hours per week, and students can expect to be in class or clinical an average of 33 hours per week. Classes and clinic are typically scheduled during weekday hours, but students are advised that the DMS Program reserves the right to establish and/or modify the schedule as necessary. All changes are provided to students with adequate notification. For the assigned number of hours per rotation, refer to the Program Timeline.
-
There is no housing available on the VUMC campus. It is recommended that students reside close to campus for didactic courses and rotations in clinic.
-
We do implement a dress code for students. More information can be found in the Program Handbook and Catalog.
-
While we do not have designated tutors for students to consult, faculty are readily available for any outside assistance needed. If a student or faculty member determines that additional outside instruction is necessary, faculty will facilitate identifying a qualified individual to assist.
-
Students are required to attend all hours within the curriculum plan. When an absence cannot be avoided, students do have requirements for making up the hours missed in class, lab, or clinical. The Make-Up Policy may be found in the DMS Handbook.
-
Students should be well-rounded and personable. They must be able to manage their time efficiently, utilize feedback to improve their skillset, carry on a conversation with strangers, and engage in critical thinking.
