Admissions FAQs

  • The VUMC DMS Program maintains a small class of 5 students each year.

  • There is no waiting list for our program. We require applications to be submitted on an annual basis.

  • This number varies from year to year. The program has no way to predict how many applications will be submitted any given year. The ratio of applications to seats within a cohort has ranged from 3:1 to 7:1.

  • We have specific admission requirements for our program listed here.

  • Applied Science degrees must be directly related to patient care.

  • Yes. All 6 prerequisites must be completed with an official transcript showing the final grades before matriculation and an enrollment agreement can be completed.

  • Prerequisites with a physics prefix (ex: PHYS) should meet criteria. Physical Science courses do NOT satisfy this prerequisite.

  • Currently, we do not impose any limit.

  • High school credits do not satisfy prerequisite requirements. Only courses from an accredited post-secondary institution will be accepted. If your high school course was dual-enrollment and that is reflected on your college transcript, it is acceptable.

  • We expect candidates to be well-rounded. In the application process, we look for characteristics such as academic ability, communication skills, self-direction, perseverance, and leadership potential.

  • Everyone interviews differently. It is good to practice with others to know how to conduct yourself during the interview process. We provide some information to interviewees about our interview process. Attending to this information will directly support your preparation. We look for good communication skills and detailed, genuine responses. Because sonographers are responsible for providing excellent patient care, we want to know that you will be able to communicate effectively, make informed decisions, and demonstrate professional behaviors.

  • We currently conduct interviews virtually.

  • While healthcare experience may give an applicant an advantage during the interview process, it does not necessarily place an applicant higher in the final ranking.

  • Full review of the website information and all FAQs will typically provide necessary information. If, after reviewing the website, an applicant still has unanswered question(s), an email inquiry to the Program Director may be sent.
