Welcome to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
Welcome to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program’s website at Vanderbilt University Medical Center! Sonography is the practice of using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) and computer technology to image anatomy for the facilitation of diagnosis in a variety of specialties and settings. This imaging modality is safe and affordable for patients while, through proper education and clinical training, is also effective in the diagnostic process.
The DMS Program at VUMC offers education and clinical training in the Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology specialties through a rigorous curriculum composed of classroom, scanning lab, and clinical practicum courses. The 18-month program integrates learning within each of these settings. An introduction to the Vascular Technology specialty is also incorporated. A low faculty-to-student ratio and participation in an academic clinical environment offer students opportunities to maximize learning.
