Alex Currie is the Vice President of Federal Relations at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and leads the institution's Office of Federal Relations based in Washington, DC. In this role, he is responsible for working with members of the medical center community to advance the patient care, research, and academic missions as they relate to policies put forward by Federal agencies and Congress. Alex is registered with the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to lobby on behalf of VUMC.
Alex also represents VUMC in national coalitions and associations on public policy and government relations (GR) issues. For example, from 2022-2023 Alex chaired the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) group of GR representatives from member teaching hospitals and medical schools. He has also served on the AAMC annual meeting advisory committee. Alex serves on GR steering committees for both the Association of American Cancer Institutes and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, is an active participant in several hospital and biomedical research GR groups and was a past president and board member of the United for Medical Research NIH advocacy coalition.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Alex served as a senior legislative aide and deputy legislative director to the late U.S. Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana. Alex began his public policy career on the staff of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, Alex has a bachelor's degree in diplomacy and international relations. On personal time, he enjoys triathlon and competing in different swimming, biking, and running races.
