Regarding expert consultation, our faculty have provided guidance for attorneys and their clients in a variety of matters. Typically, consultation does not involve expert testimony. Typical areas of consultation include the following.
- Expert review of case materials to answer specific questions about mental health related issues
- Providing in-court consultation for the purposes of direct and cross examination of witnesses
- Reviewing reports of other experts to determine if the conclusions are supported in the documentation
Forensic psychiatrists have been used in the past to educate the court about specific aspects of a case (e.g., child development, eye witness testimony, statements to police, standard and appropriate evaluation procedures).
