The Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke Global Health Fellowship Consortium (VECD) is pleased to announce the selection of the 2012 VECD Fellows. Funded by the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health this fellowship program, which is in its first year, provides year-long global health mentored research traineeships for 8-14 fellows annually. The first cohort of fellows includes two U.S. medical students, 9 U.S. post-doctoral fellows and 3 post-doctoral fellows from Haiti, Zambia, and Vietnam.

Six Vanderbilt students selected as Frist Global Health Leaders

Three students in the School of Nursing’s Master of Science in Nursing program and three rising fourth-year School of Medicine students have been selected as 2012 Frist Global Health Leaders. The program, established by Hope Through Healing Hands, provides young health professional students, residents, and fellows the opportunity to serve and train abroad in underserved communities for up to one semester.

Our Summit on Global Health opens in nine months from today. The location is Montego Bay, Jamaica, and the dates are May 24-27, 2013.
The Fulbright Academy’s mission is about "connecting and empowering Fulbright alumni to make greater impact than each can make alone."

Global Fellowship in Malawi Inspires Vanderbilt Medical Student

Brian Barnett, a fourth year student at Vanderbilt School of Medicine, discusses the valuable experience he has earned through his Fulbright-Fogarty fellowship, from overseeing a research project, to eventually analyzing data and disseminating his interpretation. Because of his time in Malawi, Barnett says there will always be a global component to his work.

World Refugee Day is June 20

This year the United Nations refugee agency launches a new campaign that features personal stories from refugees to raise awareness about the forcibly displaced and stateless. The campaign will carry the message that "One Refugee Without Hope is too Many." As a welcoming state, Tenneesee has given hope to over 337 refugees in 2012. Nashville becomes a new home for a majority of these displaced people, resettling upwards of 250 refugees this year.
