Students prepare their proposal and presentation for the 2016 Global Health Case Competition.
Participants in this university-wide competition work in interdisciplinary teams to develop and present an innovative solution to a complex, real-life global health problem. Teams consist of four to six students representing at least three different Vanderbilt schools (Blair School of Music, College of Arts and Science, Divinity School, Graduate School, Law School, Owen Graduate School of Management, Peabody College of Education and Human Development, School of Engineering, School of Medicine, School of Nursing). Students from all disciplines, backgrounds, and levels of experience are encouraged to participate each year.
Team 20 is ready to start the 2016 Global Health Case Competition!
The public is invited to this exciting event on February 11 from 10 a.m. -12 p.m. held at Vanderbilt’s School of Nursing. The competition’s Keynote Speaker, Dr. Christophe Millien, will give an inspiring talk on international development and health. Dr. Millien is an Ob/Gyn at Partners in Health Mirebalais University Hospital. Afterward, the four top teams will present their ideas and compete for first place. A reception will follow the event. The case topic remains a mystery until the competition kick-off on February 2, 2017, but may involve issues such as health care policy, international trade, child health and development, biomedical engineering, gender equality, emergency response, or chronic disease prevention. Participants do not need to have any knowledge of the case topic, nor do they need a background in medicine or health. The most successful teams take a pragmatic, multidisciplinary approach to the case and design a feasible and sustainable response given the outlined constraints.

When the case is revealed on February 2, teams will receive a packet of information and competition guidelines. They will spend the next week researching, analyzing, and preparing their recommendations on the case, which they will present on Saturday, February 11 to a panel of expert judges and audience members. Additionally, teams will have the opportunity for two consulting sessions from Vanderbilt University’s Advanced Degree Consulting Club, which will help support and prepare students as well as provide professional development and insight into program development. The winning team will represent Vanderbilt University at the annual Emory International Global Health Case Competition.

The 2016 Vanderbilt case focused on health systems strengthening in Liberia post-Ebola. Teams provided innovative, cost-effective recommendations aimed improving health infrastructure the country. You can find more information about previous cases here.
