Global Health Research Interests: Education and Training (Building Capacity), Health Professions Education

Dr. Miller earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Colorado College in 1976 and received her M.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1980. She then moved to Nashville, where she completed six years of post-graduate training in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals. During her residency, she spent 18 months researching surgical nutrition and the metabolic response to injury. After finishing her residency, Dr. Miller pursued a fellowship in hepato-biliary disease at the Virginia Mason Clinic in Seattle for one year.

Since 1987, Dr. Miller has been back in Nashville. For 11 years, she practiced as a surgeon in private practice at one of the Vanderbilt-affiliated teaching hospitals, where she worked alongside residents and medical students. Following this, she spent a year as a staff surgeon at the Nashville Veteran's Administration Medical Center. In June 1999, she took on the role of Associate Dean for Medical Students at Vanderbilt. While she enjoyed the challenges and rewards of student affairs, she felt compelled to address the issues facing medical education in the 21st century and transitioned to her current position in January 2005.

Dr. Miller's clinical interests are primarily focused on patients with breast cancer. Academically, she is interested in the moral development of physicians and the structure and function of curriculum committees.
