Helicobacter pylori infection is a strong risk factor for development of gastric cancer, the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Gastric cancer rates vary markedly throughout the world. An important goal is to identify H. pylori-infected persons who have the highest risk for development of gastric cancer.
