Joseph A Smith, Jr. is the William L. Bray Professor in the Department of Urologic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He served as Chairman of the department from 1991 to 2015. He is an AOA graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School and was chosen the Outstanding Graduate. He performed his surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, his urology residency at the University of Utah, and a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
He oversees and participates in humanitarian surgical efforts throughout the world and coordinates the participation of residents, fellows, and other faculty at Vanderbilt.
