Dr. Weiss focuses on global mental health, particularly child mental health in Southeast Asia. His work, continuously funded for over 20 years by the U.S. NIH and other agencies, includes primary research and training capacity development. He conducted the first nationally representative child mental health epidemiology survey in Vietnam (N=1,356) to investigate the impact of urbanization, and he is involved in a long-term (10-year) mental health monitoring survey in coastal central Vietnam to assess the effects of increased typhoons.
Dr. Weiss also led an NIH-funded longitudinal study, collaborating with colleagues from UCLA, UC-Davis, and Vietnamese institutions, to examine the cultural factors influencing stress and coping on adolescent mental health in the U.S. and Vietnam. His contributions to Vietnam include establishing the first Ph.D. clinical psychology training program, which is both research-focused and evidence-based.
He has taught various graduate courses, including Psychopathology and Multivariate Statistics, as well as undergraduate courses such as Introduction to Clinical Psychology. At Vanderbilt University, Dr. Weiss served as the Director of Clinical Training for the PhD program from 2016 to 2020 and was Co-Director of the Center for Psychotherapy Research and Policy from 1998 to 2009.
