Project Scope
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) will convene an ad hoc committee to recommend a definition of socioeconomic status (SES) relevant to Medicare quality measurement and payment programs; to identify the SES determinants which have been demonstrated to impact health outcomes; and to specify criteria that could be used in determining which SES factors should be accounted for in Medicare quality measurement and payment programs. Further, the committee will suggest which SES factors could be incorporated into quality measurement and/or payment methodologies. The committee's work will be conducted in phases and produce brief reports.
