Thirteen new members were selected for the Vanderbilt Academy for Excellence in Education (AEE), and were recognized at the Academy's dinner on April 24, 2017
Honored:
Kimberly B. Dahlman, PhD, joined the faculty in 2010 and is an Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology. In addition to her work as a small group facilitator in the Case-Based Learning program of the Foundations of Medical Knowledge Phase, she has contributed greatly to Curriculum 2.0 by helping to develop and lead the Precision Cancer Medicine Integrated Science Course (ISC) and as the co-leader of the ISC Program.
Daniel E. Dulek, MD, joined the faculty in 2014 and is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Infectious Disease. He has helped develop, implement, and co-direct the new Immunity and Infections in the Immune-Compromised Host Integrated Science Course and served as a portfolio coach for the past two years.
Lourdes Estrada, PhD, joined the faculty in 2004 and is an Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology. Among her many educational roles, she has served as a small group facilitator in the Case-Based Learning program of the Foundations of Medical Knowledge Phase, acts as a Portfolio Coach, co-directs the Immersion Phase of Curriculum 2.0, co-leads the Meharry-VICC-TSU Cancer Partnership Education Core, and serves as the Associate Director for Academic Programs and Operations of the Medical Scientist Training Program.
Michael J. Fowler, MD, joined the faculty in 2003 and is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism) and teaches throughout the undergraduate medical curriculum. Among his many educational roles, he directs the Physical Diagnosis Course, Co-directs the Diabetes Integrated Science Course, serves as the Director of Clinical Skills Development in Undergraduate Medical Education, and co-directs the Shade Tree Family Clinic. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the Shovel Award in 2014.
Maria Gillam-Krakauer, MD, joined the faculty in 2011 and is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology). She teaches primarily postgraduate medical education, co-directs the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) pediatric education program (which involved redesigning the curriculum for the pediatric residents), and is the Associate Director of the neonatal-perinatal medical fellowship. As part of this latter leadership role, she developed the core curriculum lecture series for the fellows.
Marie H. Martin, MD, MEd, joined the faculty in 2007 and is a Research Assistant Professor of Health Policy. She teaches extensively in the Global Health curriculum, co-directs the Global Health Track in the Master of Public Health Program, and helped to create and implement the Global Health Integrated Science Course. She has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students.
Robert F. Miller, MD, joined the faculty in 1989 and is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine (General Internal Medicine & Public Health and Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine). He teaches clinical medicine across the medical school continuum, most notably as the co-director of the Shade Tree Family Clinic. He has received numerous teaching awards and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Society in 2016.
Maya K. Neeley, MD, joined the faculty in 2010 with strong teaching credentials and is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. She has a variety of teaching roles, and co-directs the pediatric clerkship, and serves as a master clinical teacher, a faculty advisor for Chapman College, and a mentor in the Office of Diversity Affairs.
Reed A. Omary, MD, MS, joined the faculty in 2012 and is the Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and Professor of Biomedical Engineering. He teaches across the medical continuum and has a long history of mentoring students, residents, fellows, and faculty. He recently spearheaded and implemented the Medical Innovators Development Program, a first of its kind MD training program for applicants with existing PhD degrees in engineering or applied sciences.
Kendra P. Parekh, MD, FAAEM, joined the faculty in 2008 and is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine. She teaches extensively at the undergraduate and graduate levels and Directs the Emergency Medicine Advanced Clinical Elective and the Residents as Educators Course and serves as the Director of Undergraduate Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She co-created the Women in Academic Medicine Group in the Department of Emergency Medicine as well as the new Emergency Medicine Integrated Science Course.
Mayur B. Patel, MD, MPH, FACS, joined the faculty in 2010 and is an Assistant Professor in Surgery and Neurosurgery. He teaches at all levels of medical education (undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education) and serves as the co-director of the Injury, Repair, and Rehabilitation Integrated Science Course in Curriculum 2.0 and the CME Activity Director for the Research and Implementation Science Conference for the Trauma and Surgical Critical Fellows. He also has a long track record of mentoring students, residents, and fellows.
Aaron C. Shaver, MD, PhD, joined the faculty in 2012 and is an Assistant Professor of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology (Hematopathology). He teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate medical levels, and helps direct the blood module of Homeostasis. In addition to his teaching he is the new co-director of the Microbes and Immunity Foundation of Medical Knowledge Block, serves as a portfolio coach, and helps with science outreach programs.
Kim Unertl, PhD, MS, joined the faculty in 2010 and is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics. She teaches numerous graduate courses in informatics and developed the Independent Study Course in Qualitative Methods in Biomedical Informatics. She works at the national level with the American Medical Informatics Association High School Scholars Program, has mentored numerous high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and received the Department of Biomedical Informatics Outstanding Educator Award in 2016.
