Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) faculty and staff have unique health care needs that often go unaddressed.
The Vanderbilt University Medical Center Program for LGBTQ Health, housed within the Office for Diversity Affairs, works to address disparities often experienced in the LGBTQ community, improve patient health, and offer educational opportunities focused on LGBTQ health.
The program has outlined resources for students and educators, in addition to valuable resources outlined for patients.
Members of LGBTQ community are at an increased risk for a number of health threats when compared to heterosexuals.* National efforts to improve the quality of lives of the LGBTQ communities are also under way. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has summarized what efforts have taken place to improve the lives of LGBTQ people. Details on hospital visitation rights, advance directives, and the Affordable Care Act are all outlined here.
