Frailty in Hospitalized Patients with Advanced Kidney Dysfunction (CKD or AKI on CKD)

An increasing percentage of older Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patients with CKD are also more likely to experience complications like acute kidney injury (AKI) and hospitalizations, which can affect their prognosis. Data indicates that quality of life, symptom burdens, social support, frailty, health outcome prioritization, and disability are associated with disease outcomes in patients with CKD. More information about these variables in a critically ill CKD population could improve understanding of factors that affect illness trajectory. The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between critical illness and functional impairment and determine their effect on outcomes such as mortality, re-hospitalization and loss of independence.
