Impact of Medicare Advantage coverage changes on transplants and CAR-T cell therapy

Changes in Vanderbilt Health's participation in Blue Cross Blue Shield Tennessee Medicare Advantage – Blue Advantage will have specific impact on transplant patients. How this change affects you is different based on which insurance plan you have. 

In all cases, we recommend you talk to your transplant financial counselor about these changes.

See the list of common questions and answers below. 

  • If you are enrolled with BCBSTN’s Medicare Advantage, you can still use your VUMC doctors and its hospital as VUMC has a separate transplant agreement, which is not terminated, for your transplant-related services from the beginning of your evaluation until 12 months after you receive your transplant.  

    You may still see your doctor and receive transplant treatment at VUMC, as you have in the past, for a period of 12-months after your transplant. 

    If your transplant was more than 12 months ago, this change will impact you. 

    If you are affected by this change and wish to continue to receive care at VUMC, VUMC participates with all products of the following Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans:  

    • Traditional Medicare 
    • Aetna Medicare Advantage 
    • Cigna HealthSpring Medicare Advantage  
    • Farm Bureau Medicare Advantage  
    • UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage 

    BCBSTN Medicare Advantage members may call BCBSTN at 1-800-831-2583, TTY 711 to locate a new, in-network provider to transition your care.

  • BCBSTN Medicare Advantage transplant patients may not continue to see their VUMC doctors or use its hospital for non-transplant related services after December 31, 2024, as VUMC will be out of network after this date.
