Commencement Celebration 2024
The Vanderbilt Vascular Neurology fellowship is a one-year, intensive clinical training program, accredited by the ACGME that prepares its graduates to enter a wide variety of careers in stroke and vascular neurology. The cornerstone of the fellowship is the 6 months fellows spend on the busy inpatient stroke service, where they serve as junior attendings. This experience is bolstered by a twice-weekly continuity clinic, as well as exposure to tele-neurology, neurocritical care, neuroradiology, inpatient rehabilitation, and research. Fellows train primarily at Vanderbilt University Hospital, with one continuity clinic at the adjacent Veterans Affairs Hospital and rehab experience at Vanderbilt-affiliated Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center and winner of “Get with the Guidelines Gold Plus” and “Target Stroke Elite.” We are situated in the heart of the stroke belt and have a busy clinical service with a unique and sometimes complex case load involving multiple specialties. The hospital is a tertiary care facility with a large Neuro ICU. VUMC has a robust multidisciplinary stroke team caring for on average over 2000 patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke per year.
Fellows participate in varied educational experiences designed to provide them with high-level discussion of topics in vascular neurology. This consists of weekly didactics, attended virtually by faculty members, during which fellows discuss both core basic/clinical science content as well as the primary literature. A weekly interdisciplinary conference includes the stroke fellows and faculty, as well as neurosurgery, the Neuro ICU, neuroradiology and nursing.
Our program has a 100% boards pass rate, and graduates consistently obtain their position of choice after completing fellowship. This all occurs in a collegial and collaborative environment, encouraging our fellows to interact positively with coworkers.
