The Dietitian's Role in Diabetes Management.
Landmark studies like the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) showed that careful control of blood glucose prevents or delays long-term complications of diabetes. Increased attention to nutritional management is now an integral part of patient education. Many of the skills and strategies required not routinely taught to dietitians during their training to assist patients in achieving that careful control of blood glucose. Participants in this course will achieve the following learning objectives:
State the pathophysiology of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes |

Explain types of insulin, action time, and meal planning considerations |

Explain Type 2 medications and meal planning considerations |

State the American Diabetes Association Medical Nutrition Priorities |
||
State the American Diabetes Association goals for MNT in diabetes |
||
Use collaboration with patient to achieve MNT goals |
||
Select the most appropriate nutrition management strategy |
