Bio:
Claire Brindis, DrPH, is a Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy and the Edward A. Dickson Emeritus Professor, at the University of California, San Franscisco (UCSF). She is a member of the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Health Sciences, Emerita Director of the Phillip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies and one of the Founding Directors of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. Dr. Brindis is also the Co-Director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Health National Resource Center and on faculty of the HC Hastings School of Law and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.
Dr. Brindis' research focuses on ameliorating the impact social, health, and economic disparities among ethnic/racial populations, with a particular focus on women and adolescents. Her research analyzes how disparities impact health outcomes, access to quality care and health insurance coverage, and the impact of migration and acculturation on Latinx health. As a bi-lingual, bi-cultural researcher, Dr. Brindis' research also includes consumer engagement in health care system re-design, effective substance abuse treatment strategies, and closing the gap between evidence-based innovation and its application to policy and programs. She is the Principal Investigator of the NIH Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) K12 program and is Senior Scholar with the UC-Center for Climate, Health and Equity.
Dr. Brindis has been recognized for her skills as a mentor and researcher, receiving the California Department of Health Services, Myers Award for Excellence in Public Health, the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau Director's Award, the Martha May Eliot Award in Maternal and Child Health, American Public Health Association (2020) and the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau Title V Lifetime Achievement Award (2021).
Dr. Brindis is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), serves as Vice-Chair on the NAM Council, on the Committee on Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Public Policy, and on the Advisory Committee, NAM Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Health and Medicine, and on the National Research Council. Dr. Brindis serves as the Chair of the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Standing Committee on Reproductive Health, Equity and Society.
In the interface between research and public policy, Dr. Brindis is called upon to help community groups, local, state, and the federal government, and international entities in helping to translate research findings for purposes of policy planning and development of new program interventions. These experiences led Dr. Brindis to also co-author, Advocacy and Policy Change Evaluation: Theory and Practice (Stanford Press, 2017).
