Primary call is taken by the first year residents. The second year resident will rotate every 5th night for six weeks on “buddy” call with the first year residents. Around August 15, first year residents start to take call on their own.
After the first 6 weeks of the year, a night float system begins.
Night float is one of the 5 rotations for first year residents.
The night float and adult daytime consult resident (also a first year rotation) alternate night float and daytime consults responsibilities every 2 weeks.
Night float covers Sunday night through Thursday night.
Friday night (4:30 p.m. - 7:00 a.m), Saturday (7:00 a.m - 7:00 a.m.), and Sunday daytime (7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.) are covered on a rotating call schedule by the first year residents not on night float.
Night float shifts begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 7:00 a.m. The night float resident is expected to attend morning lecture from 7 to 8 AM and sign out to the daytime consult resident.
Night float/call responsibilities include:
ER and inpatient consults at Vanderbilt Hospital (VUH), Vanderbilt Children's Hospital (VCH), and the Nashville VA Medical Center (VAMC)
Management and follow-up of inpatients followed by VUH, VCH, and VAMC Ophthalmology services
All admissions to the Ophthalmology services at these hospitals
Answering calls and performing any necessary after-hours visits from Vanderbilt Eye Institute patients
Senior Call
Call is rotated among the second and third year residents on a weekly basis.
Senior call responsibilities include:
Performing all emergent surgical procedures under the supervision of the attending physician
Overseeing the admission of all patients to either VUMC, VCH, or VAMC
Assisting the first call resident with any questions or problems he or she might have in the course of the call Rounding on weekends on all new inpatient consults with the attending on-call
