Ronnie Mubang, M.D.
Dr. Mubang joined our surgical faculty as an assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care after having completed his fellowships in Acute Care Surgery and Burn Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. His clinical areas of expertise include acute and reconstructive burns; burns and emergency treatment; trauma and critical care; emergency general surgery; and complex skin and soft tissue injury.
Research
Dr. Mubang’s current research focuses on burn surgery and lipid peroxidation, burn shock, and burn wound conversions necessitating surgery; muscle wasting in traumatic brain injury patients with the help of metabolomics; and smoking on home oxygen and burn related injuries. Prior research focused on traumatic brain injury and prognostication tools looking at computer tomography of the head to correlate with morbidity and mortality. Dr. Mubang also researched foreign objects during surgery by doing a systematic review and meta analysis of retained surgical items and blood product resuscitation in trauma.
Dr. Mubang is co-investigator on a grant to investigate the role of inflammatory markers in burn patients and novel therapeutic approaches to halt inflammation for the Division of Trauma and Burn Surgery at VUMC.

Dr. Mubang also coauthored with the Equity, Quality, and Inclusion in Trauma Surgery Practice Ad Hoc Task Force: Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma Statement on Structural Racism, and the Deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, Annals of Surgery.

Dr. Mubang is a member of the American Medical Association; Academic Surgical Congress; Association for Academic Surgery of Trauma; Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons; National Association of Black Academic Surgeons; Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma; and American Burn Association. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
Dr. Mubang earned the Resident of the Year Award, the Excellent Academic Achievement Award, and the GME/Resident Organization Appreciation Award at St Luke's University Health Network, Bethlehem, PA. He earned the Physician of the Month Award/Surgery ICU at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN.
Education
Dr. Mubang earned his Bachelor of Science in cell biology from Pace University, New York City, and his MD from American University of Antigua, Coolidge, Antigua. He served his internship in General Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN and his residency in General Surgery at St. Luke's University Health Network, Bethlehem, PA.
Dr. Mubang is also an advocate for physical and lifestyle fitness and a French language tutor.
