Research Fellowship

Overview

The Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers an exceptional research fellowship program, blending cutting-edge research with comprehensive mentorship in a multidisciplinary environment. Fellows gain exposure to diverse areas, including craniofacial and pediatrics reconstruction, breast reconstruction, aesthetic surgery, hand and peripheral nerve surgery, lymphedema surgery, migraine surgery, and transgender surgery, among others. With access to state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative team, this fellowship is tailored to foster innovation and academic excellence while contributing to advancing the specialty.

Educational Objectives

The research fellowship at VUMC aims to cultivate future leaders in plastic surgery research. Fellows will receive immersive training in protocol design, IRB submission, data collection and analysis, abstract preparation, and manuscript writing. The program also emphasizes mentorship in grant writing and research methodologies to ensure success in academic and clinical research. Participants will collaborate closely with residents, faculty, and fellows, gaining valuable experience in both basic science and clinical studies. This fellowship encourages a minimum commitment of one year, with two years preferred for optimal skill development and project completion.

Meharry Medical Students Opportunity

In addition to the general fellowship, there is a unique opportunity for Meharry Medical Students interested in breast surgery research within the plastic surgery department. This is a fully funded, one-year research fellowship designed to provide immersive experience and mentorship. This position begins on June 23, 2025.
