"Catatonia and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): lessons learnt"

Summary:
This presentation will include an overview of catatonia and the use of ECT in the treatment of the condition. Under or missed diagnosis appears to be one of the major challenges in managing this disorder. Several barriers to accurate and prompt diagnosis have been identified which will be discussed. These may include a diverse presentation, symptom-overlap with other disorders, limitations resulting from the current diagnostic criteria and rating scales, excessive/exclusive reliance on conceptualizing the disorder via a lens of behavior psychology and the stigma associated with the use of benzodiazepines and ECT.
In regard with ECT, while this is not a novel modality, a thorough understanding of what constitutes as adequate treatment in a patient with catatonia will be discussed.
Neuroleptic malignance syndrome (NMS) will be briefly described which is probably the most serious complication of catatonia due to its association with a high mortality rate.
The content of the presentation will include published literature, unpublished data and patient videos. Any video or a photograph used during the presentation will be with written permission of a guardian for educational purpose.
