Our Focus

The Speech Kinematics and Acoustics Lab investigates how neurogenic movement disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington’s disease) impact speech production. One main goal is to better understand the speech motor impairments of speakers with dysarthria and how these impairments contribute to the speech acoustic deviancies and speech intelligibility loss.

Another main goal is to gain insights in the articulatory mechanisms that underlie improved speech acoustics and speech intelligibility in response to behavioral modifications, which are common treatment approaches for speakers with dysarthria. The findings of this line of research can provide guidance in the selection of the most effective speech treatments for these speakers.
