Matthew C. Surdel, Ph.D.

Matthew, originally from Minnesota, received his B.S. in Biochemistry and Music from Davidson College in 2010. He joined the Vanderbilt Medical Scientist Training Program and earned his PhD in microbiology. He studied the responses of S. aureus and B. anthracis to heme. Surdel has moved to the Medical College of Wisconsin where he is a Research Assistant Professor and he studies the pathogenic determinants of spirochetes (including Leptospira spp. and Borrelia burgdorferi), with a specific focus on their ability to bind and invade host tissues.
