José Antonio Diaz, MD, Research Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the Division of Surgical Research, previously served as a Research Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery in the Conrad Jobst Vascular Research Laboratories in the Section of Vascular Surgery at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Diaz is a Vascular Surgeon trained in Cardiovascular and General Surgery with additional specialization in ultrasonography and phlebology. Following his career as a surgeon in Argentina, Dr. Diaz moved to the United States to be trained in basic science research under an NIH T32 training program in Vascular Biology at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Diaz is internationally recognized for his contributions to surgical preclinical model development and vascular disease research. He is interested in surgical research, vascular biology, and immunology, with expertise in deep vein thrombosis, aneurysm, pre-clinical models, and thrombosis. Dr. Diaz is a Board member of the American Venous Forum and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He is also a member of the American Heart Association, the Argentinian College of Venous and Lymphatic Surgery and is an American Venous Forum Distinguished Fellow. He garnered the PVD/ATVB Robert W. Hobson, II, MD Early Career Investigator Award, and became a Fellow of the American Heart Association.

Research

Dr. Diaz’s research interests include surgical research, cardiovascular research, deep vein thrombosis, and transnational pre-clinical models of diseases. He has published articles in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and Arteriosclerosis, and "Choosing a Mouse Model of Venous Thrombosis", a simultaneous publication in the Journal Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. This paper is the first consensus in pre-clinical models of venous thrombosis that provided information on model standardization, discussed advantages and disadvantages of each model and included a model selection algorithm that allows investigators and grant reviewers to choose the most appropriate pre-clinical model based on the research question.

El Dr. José Antonio Diaz, Profesor Asociado de Investigación en Cirugía, es el Director de la División de Investigaciones Quirúrgicas de la Universidad de Vanderbilt. Previamente fue Profesor Asistente de Investigación en el Laboratorio de Investigaciones Vasculares de la Universidad de Michigan en Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Diaz es Cirujano Vascular entrenado en Cirugía General y Cirugía Vascular con formación en Ecografía Doppler Vascular Periférica y especialización en Flebolinfología egresado de la Universidad Católica Argentina. Tras finalizar su formación en Cirugía General, Cirugía Vascular y Patología Venosa en Argentina, el Dr. Diaz completó un Fellowship en Biología Vascular en la Universidad de Michigan.

Actualmente, el Dr. Diaz es reconocido internacionalmente por sus contribuciones en el desarrollo y aplicación estratégica de modelos preclínicos para el estudio de enfermedades cardiovasculares, así como por sus investigaciones en biología vascular and inmunología, focalizando su mayor interés en Trombosis Venosa Profunda. Dr. Diaz es miembro del Board of Directors del American Venous Forum y de la Sociedad Internacional de trombosis y Hemostasia. También es miembro del American Heart Association del Colegio Argentino de Cirugía Venosa y Linfática. El Dr. Diaz fue distinguido como Fellow del American Venous Forum y Fellow del American Heart Association y ha sido galardonado con el premio PVD/ATVB Robert W. Hobson, II, MD Early Career Investigator Award del American Heart Association.

Investigación

El Dr. Diaz se ha interesado en Investigaciones Quirúrgicas particularmente Investigaciones Vasculares en el área de Trombosis Venosa Profunda y ha desarrollado un particular interés por el desarrollo de modelos preclínicos. Dr. Diaz tiene publicaciones científicas en Ingles y español incluyendo las guías de selección de modelos preclínicos para estudiar la trombosis venosa profunda en forma experimental. Esta publicación es el primer consensus escrito en el tema y en su contenido versa en ventajas, desventajas y aplicación de cada modelo e incluye un algoritmo que permite elegir el modelo mas apropiado dependiendo del objetivo de la investigación.
