TIPS Project collaboration with Drs. Betina Durovni and Solange Cavalcante

Drs. Betina Durovni and Solange Cavalcante spent three days in Nashville November 12-14, 2015 to continue discussions about a currently funded TIPS project, “Building a Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Assessing the Quality of Healthcare in Brazil”. Betina, Undersecretary for the Rio de Janeiro Health Secretariat, and Solange, Investigator at the Instituto Nacional de Infectologia, work closely with the community health clinics in a well-known favela, Rocinha, in Rio de Janeiro. They presented on the health system in Rio de Janeiro, with a specific focus on TB and HIV, at both a TB Center event on Thursday, November 12 and a TIPS Project workshop on Friday, November 13.

Betina and Solange met with Vanderbilt Faculty from the Center for Latin American Studies and the Latin America Public Opinion Project, who are involved with the TIPS project. They also spent time meeting with Faculty from the Division of Infectious Diseases and doctors and staff from the TB Clinic at the Metro Nashville Public Health Department.

They enjoyed their time spent in Nashville, and even with a busy schedule were able to enjoy a Southern BBQ dinner and country music on Broadway.

The Trans-Institutional Program Award (TIPS), “Building a Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Assessing the Quality of Healthcare in Brazil” is led by Marshall Eakin in the Department of History, Liz Zechmeister in the Department of Political Science, and Tim Sterling in School of Medicine.
