Multiple convergent factors make the local environment ripe for such an initiative. Meharry Medical College is deeply rooted in community-oriented health care service delivery in prevention and disease management to underserved and minority populations, and a rich history of nationally recognized Community Engaged Research. Strong relationships with the community have been established by specific HIV programs at Vanderbilt. There are strong ties to Nashville CARES and other HIV regional community-based organizations. The Tennessee Department of Health has statewide CDC-funded HIV-focused community outreach.
