Hello and welcome to our unit!
I am Pamela Milam, MHA, BSN, RN, Manager of Patient Care Services for the Medical Center East OR, also known as MCE OR. We are located on the North Tower 3rd Floor at Vanderbilt University Hospital.
The environment on our unit is fast-paced with high energy and flexibility to meet the needs of our patients. We care for Adult patients aged 18 to 100 who are being treated for cancer, hearing loss, facial fractures, obesity, retinal detachment, open eye globe, reconstruction of face and body, foot and ankle problems, thyroid conditions, body dysmorphia, sinus issues, and airway stenosis.
Our patients are unique because they can go home after surgery with a few percent that stay overnight in observation. One of the perks of working on my unit is providing care to a diverse group of patients that focus on same-day surgeries without the prolonged post-op care.
Our nurses are successful because they have demonstrated clinical expertise, have strong communication skills, and work effectively as part of a team. Additionally, our nurses work cohesively with other interdisciplinary departments to provide positive patient outcomes.
We orient new nurses to our unit by providing an extensive specialized multi-specialty orientation period dependent upon the candidate's learning style and speed. Staff are encouraged to develop expertise in particular surgical areas offered by multi-specialties.
