Hello and welcome to our unit!
I’m Brett Young, DNP, RN, Manager of the Medical/Pulmonary ICU. We are located on the 8th Floor of the new Tower Expansion at Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH).
The environment on this unit will be upbeat and challenging. It will embrace strong team collaboration, with nurses and providers participating in rounding.
The patient population on this unit will be adult patients ranging in age from 18 years and older who are being treated for Acute Respiratory Failure, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Multisystem Organ System Failure, Sepsis, Drug Overdoses, Gastrointestinal Bleeds, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Hypertensive Crisis, Acute/Chronic Renal Failure, and Liver Failure/Cirrhosis.
One of the perks of working in this unit will be the unique opportunity of opening a brand-new unit with a multidisciplinary team. In addition to traditional ICU assignments, another perk is the inclusion of progressive care beds which allows nurses to care for patients who need more monitoring than a general care or stepdown unit, but not the full intensity of ICU care.
We orient new nurses to our unit by providing an 8–12-week orientation based on previous experience and individualized needs.
We encourage professional growth.
If your career goal is to develop a broad range of critical care skills and knowledge, the Medical/Pulmonary ICU will provide a strong foundation for learning in a collaborative team environment.
