Certification is the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote optimal health outcomes. After meeting defined eligibility criteria, a certification candidate achieves a nationally recognized credential through the successful completion of a rigorous examination.
Certification examples include:
CCRN, CPN, OCN, CNOR, RN-BC, PMH-BC, NE-BC, AMB-BC, etc. and Board-Certified Nurse Practitioners.
Certificates are not included. Examples of certificates include:
Specific nursing roles have designated skill sets that are required for safe patient care, such as basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS), ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy, and others. While these skill sets are crucial to patient safety, professional certification goes above and beyond this to measure and acknowledge an exceptional level of competency in nursing specialties.
