Creating Test Patients in Epic

Creating the Patient

When testing workflows and builds, it's often necessary to have test patients. While some exist in various environments, it is sometimes beneficial to create your own. In the video linked below, Dr. Allison McCoy demonstrates how to create a test patient in Hyperspace. Please note that it is against VUMC policy to create test patients in the production environment--they must be created in a testing environment only.

Creating Encounters

In the video below, Dr. McCoy demonstrates how to create both outpatient and inpatient encounters for the test patient. For outpatient scenarios, you can select the "Create Encounter" tab within the patient's chart, but if you want to fill out the pre-visit workflow in MyChart, you'll need to schedule an appointment using Patient Station first and then complete their "check-in" (as a patient access specialist). For inpatient encounters, you'll need to log in as a nurse to create a "New Admission" using Patient Station, which will require you to complete the admission checklist. For both check-in processes, make sure you indicate the patient is "self-pay" to get around some of the coverage requirements. Keep the patient class "outpatient" initially, and then you can submit an "Admit to Inpatient" order when logged in as a physician.  See Confluence for more information about logging into different roles in Hyperspace.

Entering Patient Data

In many cases, you may need certain information about patients to be documented in the record, such as lab results, flowsheets, and medication administrations. In the video linked below, Dr. McCoy demonstrates how to enter lab results for a test patient, use the flowsheet navigator to document flowsheet values, and indicate medications administered.

MyChart

You may also want to test some functionalities for the patient-facing side within MyChart, or MyHealthatVanderbilt. We have instances of MyChart for our POC and TST environments, so you'll want to do testing in one of these. In the video linked below, Dr. McCoy demonstrates how to create a MyChart account for a test patient.
