Introduction to Signal
In the video below, Dr. Sean Huang introduces Signal, an analytics tool in Epic containing physician efficiency data. This includes details like time managing inbox, placing orders, writing clinical notes and letters, reviewing charts, and more. Since the EHR is a major source of burnout among providers, this efficiency data can be very useful for identifying opportunities for workflow improvement.
Types of Physician Efficiency Data (part 1)
In the video below, Dr. Huang continues his demonstration of Signal, including the many types of data and granularity levels available within the Overview, In Basket, and Orders tabs. Dr. Huang explains the proficiency score and PEP score and how his own data compare to the provider average. There are also graphs to display time in various parts of the EHR over the course of a single day as well as metrics for how those times compare to the past 28 days.
Types of Physician Efficiency Data (part 2)
In the video below, Dr. Huang continues his demonstration of Signal, including the data available within the Notes & Letters, Clinical Review, Workload, and Training tabs, using his own data as an example. He also briefly explains how Signal allows you to observe trends over time and print reports for record keeping.
There are opportunities to use Signal for research. We have collected weekly metrics for each provider since January 2021. These data are available with IRB approval. Please reach out to Bryan Steitz (bryan.d.steitz@vumc.org) for more information and to request access.
