Katie Brennan, MSN, RN, NE-BC
Associate Nursing Officer,
Primary Care Patient Care Center
I began my nursing career at VUMC in 1983 after graduating from Vanderbilt University. I worked in the Children's Hospital as a staff nurse and Assistant Nurse Manager. After obtaining my MSN from Vanderbilt, I worked as a pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and Clinical Manager. I took a 10-year break from VUMC while my children were young and worked as a school nurse and as an office nurse in a pediatric practice. I returned to VUMC in 2006 to ambulatory nursing in the pediatric diabetes clinic as a Case Manager. I transitioned to a leadership role in diabetes and internal medicine in 2010 as Assistant Administrator and now maintain my current role as Administrative Director.
I believe Vanderbilt is the best place to practice nursing. The culture at VUMC encourages nurses to find their voice and actively engage in discussions that ultimately improve patient care. Shared decision making and interdisciplinary collaboration that includes nursing makes VUMC a great place to practice nursing. The academic environment allows and encourages nurses to ask questions, teach, mentor, and precept other new nurses. It is an honor to be a nurse leader at Vanderbilt.
