M. Benjamin Shoemaker, MD
I am a cardiac electrophysiologist and physician scientist with a clinical/translational research program focused on improving therapies for patients with atrial fibrillation and inherited arrhythmia syndromes.
Dr. Shoemaker is a cardiac electrophysiologist and physician-scientist in the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute (VHVI). He conducts patient-oriented research focused on improving therapies for atrial fibrillation (AF) and inherited arrhythmia syndromes. Currently, his research program encompasses projects ranging from electrophysiologic phenotyping in the EP laboratory of patients with cardiac arrhythmia syndromes, genomics research through collaboration with large multicenter consortia (e.g. AF Gen), and conducting Phase II randomized-controlled trials of investigational antiarrhythmic drugs for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. He came to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2009 after completing Internal Medicine Residency at Johns Hopkins University. He obtained formal training in clinical research through the Vanderbilt Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation program. He is married to Ashley Shoemaker, a physician-scientist is the division of Pediatric Endocrinology. They have two children, Emma and Peter.
