  • College students interested in a medical career should complete liberal arts requirements but follow a pre-med course of study. Nearly all accredited colleges offer a standard pre-med curricula, which typically include calculus, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology and physics. Academic majors are unrelated to medical school admission, but students must successfully complete a four-year undergraduate college program before entering medical school.

    If you think you have an interest in anesthesiology, read more about it. Most colleges and universities have subscriptions to popular anesthesia journals and texts available through their library system. A key book to read is Miller's Anesthesia.

  • Medical student eduction is an integral element of the mission of the Department of Anesthesiology.  An array of clinical electives, lectures, critical skills workshops and research opportunities enable students to gain knowledge and develop clinical skills that are the foundation of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. Whether it is in the intensive care unit, the pain clinic or in the operating room, students experience the application of pharmacology, anatomy and physiology in a real life, fast-moving setting. Student may shadow faculty anesthesiologists for a day or commit to a month-long clinical rotation or research project.

    We encourage all students considering anesthesiology as a career path to join the Anesthesiology Interest Group and explore all that this specialty has to offer.

  • The Clinical Base Year provides a strong foundation in medicine, surgery, critical care and perioperative care, facilitating a smooth transition into anesthesiology training at the end of the year. Fifteen categorical positions are available for the Clinical Base Year (CBY) of residency training. Interns rotate through the following services at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and the VA Medical Center:

    • 2 months Surgery
    • 2 months Internal Medicine
    • 2 months Perioperative Medicine
    • 2 months Critical Care (Surgical ICU, Medical ICU)
    • 1 month Emergency Medicine
    • 1 month Neuroscience
    • 1 month Pain Medicine
      1 month Anesthesiology

  • The Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology is pleased to offer ACGME-accredited fellowships in the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Division of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine, Division of Pain Medicine, Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology and Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, and in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain.

    We offer a non-ACGME accredited Global Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology, and Neuroanesthesiology fellowships.
