The Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology Clinician Scientist Training in Perioperative Science Fellowship is supported by a T32 funding mechanism. The fellowship prepares basic and physician scientists for the unique challenges associated with the optimization of perioperative care. Program Overview: The fellowship program funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) provides a two-year mentored research experience in one of the four areas listed above. While primarily geared toward anesthesiologists, the fellowship program is open to other individuals from other medical fields provided that the applicant demonstrates interest in the overall mission of the training program. The program recognizes the unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the clinical workforce, so we encourage applications from women, underrepresented minority physicians, and persons with disabilities.
Each of the four research themes directly relates to the overarching aim of the program to train the next generation of scientists to create new knowledge and translate it into best evidence for personalized perioperative care and pain management at a population level. The training faculty consists of an exceptionally strong collection of physician-scientists and basic scientists who offer superb interdisciplinary research training opportunities in seven different academic departments at Vanderbilt.
The training program will accept two-three new trainees per year (maximum 6 participants per year) with ratios depending on availability: four clinicians and two PhDs or three clinicians and three PhDs. Clinicians who show exceptional aptitude for successfully pursuing an academic research career and PhD scientists who demonstrate the best aptitude to develop towards independence will be considered for participation. Each participant will commit to a two-year basic science, clinical and/or translational research project with 75% effort for clinicians and 100% effort for PhDs. In addition to their research project training, trainees will receive coursework instruction in research-related processes such as grant writing, publications, ethics, and responsible conduct of research. This training will prepare them to utilize the skills they acquire in the pursuit of future academic research careers.

In order to participate in the TIPS Fellowship Program, the following requirements must be met:
- Maintenance of better-than-average clinical competence evaluations.
- Creation of a mentoring committee composed of the mentor, one member of the O & S Committee, and one or two additional Vanderbilt faculty members with expertise in the area of research.
- Mentorship committee must meet at the nine-month and 18-month periods to assess progress and advise on independent grant submission.
- Independent grant should be submitted no later than the end of the two-year training period, but ideally before that time.
- Mandatory attendance to Responsible Conduct of Research training meetings, including the provision of records of their attendance.
- Fellow must provide progress reports to the O & S Committee at 11 months and at 23 months.
- Mandatory participation in a monthly BH Robbins seminar series that covers a broad range of research topics including but not limited to ongoing research in the department, available resources for research at Vanderbilt and topics fundamental to design and conduct of research-mentorship, basic statistics, navigating the IRB, medical writing, grant writing, public speaking etc. Attendance of greater than 75% is expected.
