Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is one of the largest academic medical centers in the Southeast, managing more than 2 million patient visits each year. Its hospitals perform more than 35,000 surgical procedures and see 65,000 patients in its Emergency Room. VUMC is known for its highly acclaimed teaching hospital and its groundbreaking efforts in electronic medical records. VUMC is an independent non-profit organization, but maintains academic affiliations with Vanderbilt University.
Clinical sites for placement with the VUMC CPE include the following: Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt University Medical Center Hospital and Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital.
An increasingly diverse population requires the hospitals to consider a multiplicity of spiritual needs. CPE students can learn and do ministry with all ages from many faith groups and cultures. Students are exposed to the wide range of opportunities provided by a patient care research-focused institution with accompanying resources of libraries, divinity and medical schools, and other health disciplines as well as numerous religious communities. CPE students provide care alongside the pastoral care staff and community clergy.
