In intensive care units (ICUs), a patient's brain function status can shift from a state of acute brain dysfunction (ABD) to one that is ABD-free and vice versa, which is challenging to forecast and, in turn, hampers the allocation of hospital resources. 

Any digital health conference features its share of machine learning evangelism. Technology executives give fervent testimonials about its power to save lives and money, to predict episodes of severe illness, to help hospitals root out inefficiency.  This year's gathering of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) in Las Vegas was no different. But in between the glowing anecdotes, an aggressive counter narrative emerged: Machine learning needs a watchdog.

The 2021 Vanderbilt Biomedical Informatics Summer Program (VBISP) began on June 1 and ended on August 6, 2021. A total of 14 undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds conducted individual research projects with DBMI faculty as well as group projects to address vaccine literacy.  Throughout the internship, we shared profiles of each student. The Vanderbilt Clinical Informatics Center (VCLIC) is back with its first workshop of this academic year! Please join VCLIC on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 to learn about Epic! This workshop will be co-led by Allison McCoy, PhD, and Aileen Wright, MD, MS. The first half of the course will focus on clinical workflows (led by VCLIC director Adam Wright, PhD), and the second half will focus on CDS and build capabilities in Epic (led by Dr. McCoy). 

Colin Walsh, MD, MA, FAMIA, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Medicine and Psychiatry, was featured in a 2020 article in Harper's Magazine, titled "The Undiscovered Country: Can Suicide be Predicted?"

Groups of students in the Vanderbilt Biomedical Informatics Summer Program (VBISP) will be presenting their solution for the 2021 VBISP Design Challenge: Technology to Enhance Vaccine Literacy.
