Research

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) has a vibrant research program, ranging from the development of large-scale operational clinical information systems to the engineering and application of artificial intelligence methods to make sense of large amounts of clinical and biological data.  Building on work from DBMI, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) was the first healthcare organization to include genetic information in EHR-driven clinical decision support through the computerized provider order-entry system and electronic prescribing application to guide providers to dose selected medications according to a genome-informed model.  These and more advances have led VUMC to be known as a state-of-the-art living laboratory for innovations that support population health.

In addition to faculty-driven research, DBMI is home to four centers, exploring different aspect of biomedical informatics, including clinical informatics, real-world health, precision medicine and genetics, and artificial intelligence. Reach out to mia.garchitorena@vumc.org to learn more about our various centers.

A unique aspect of DBMI is its deep embedding across VUMC and VU. DBMI faculty regularly collaborate with colleagues in numerous departments, including computer science, biomedical engineering, public health, nursing, biostatistics, global health, radiology, and nearly every subspecialty of medicine.

As Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer of VUMC, remarked:

“DBMI creates tools that improve the wellbeing of clinicians, staff and patients across the institution and in many cases nationwide. At the same time, innovations shaping both research and training nationally and worldwide find their roots in DBMI. It has been an honor to work closely with a number of very distinguished DBMI chairs over three decades. VUMC and all of healthcare benefit from the many extraordinary contributions DBMI has already made and I know will continue in the future.”
