Toward promoting effective leadership in grants management and research administration at partner sites Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and Bayero University Kano (BUK) in Nigeria, the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) organized and facilitated the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Research Administration and Grant Management Training Program (V-RAMP), Pre-Award Training Workshop in March of 2022.
“This workshop is a well-measured step toward conducting internationally sound and acceptable research at AKTH,” said Professor Zubairu Iliyasu, a Principal Investigator on the VRAMP program and the chairman of the National Health Research Ethics committee (NHREC).
Professor Aliyu Abdu, a co-PI on the VRAMP project, referred to the workshop as “a superb engagement toward increasing quality productivity, building effective teamwork between researchers and research administrators and facilitating astute global research best practices at AKTH AND BUK.”
The workshop aimed to strengthen the skills and competencies of twenty-four research and grant administrators who work on funded programs in collaboration with VIGH to successfully administer sponsored projects, lead grant administration teams, and develop grants administration training programs at their institutions.
The Chief Medical Director of AKTH, Professor Abdurahaman Abba Sheshe provided opening statements and said the workshop “is a long-awaited project and a meaningful step in the right direction.”
Holly Cassell, MPH, VIGH Assistant Director for Collaborative Relations, conducted the workshop in partnership with V-RAMP principal investigators and senior research administrators in Nigeria. Workshop core objectives for participants included:
- understanding the research administrator’s role in the research enterprise,
- understand the grant lifecycle and identify funding opportunities,
- understand the basics of grant budgets and development,
- understand grant components required for submission,
- and building awareness of tools for project tracking.
Enthused about how highly impacted they were by the training workshop, participants declared the interest of many more potential participants from other health institutions in Nigeria willing to register for the next training workshop on post-award grants management.
Professor (Mrs.) Hadiza Galadanchi, a senior faculty member and head of the African Center of Excellence in Population Health and Policy Bayero University Kano (ACEPHAP), described the workshop as “a welcome, excellent and on-time initiative.”
