By Ethan Adeniyi Adeyemo, V-RAMP Program Manager at AKTH
The Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH), in collaboration with Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and Bayero University Kano (BUK), organized the final workshop on research administration and effective leadership at AKTH in March for the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Research Administration and Management Training Program (V-RAMP). The workshop trained 17 research administrators from Bayero University Kano (BUK), AKTH, Muritala Specialist Hospital, Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, and Kano Independent Research Center Trust.
Professor Auwalu Umar Gadija, Chief Medical Director of AKTH, commented on the dedication and unequaled professionalism of the Vanderbilt and AKTH teams and was impressed by the comprehensiveness of the material covered during the workshop. Participants appreciated the instructive and well-delivered workshop. They look forward to utilizing acquired skills in collaboration with researchers in their institutions and training other junior research administrators.
Concentrating on National Institutes of Health (NIH) standards and guidelines, research administrators took practicum-structured deep dives into best practices for monitoring and managing grant-funded projects and program management. V-RAMP principal investigator Professor Zubairu Iliyasu, Chairman of the National Health Research Ethics Committee, considered the workshop “the very best of its kind.”
Program leadership attendees included Professor Muktar Aliyu, Director of VIGH; Professor Zubairu Iliyasu, Professor of Medicine at AKTH and Nigeria Chairman of the National Health Research Ethics Committee; Professor Aliyu Abdu, Head of Internal Medicine at BUK; Mr. Bilya Sani Musa, Assistant Director of Administration at AKTH, Mr. Awwal Gambo, Clinical Trials Manager at AKTH, Ms. Holly Cassell, Associate Director at VIGH and Chelsea Van-Wyk, Senior Population/Public Health Manager at VIGH.
